Welcome to Posada

Your vacation home in the Quijos Valley

Your home in the Quijos Valley

Welcome to our cozy cottage nestled in the gorgeous Quijos Valley, a hidden gem away from the beaten path. Picture this: back in the swinging 60s, our intrepid parents rolled up their sleeves and crafted this haven from scratch. With no highways in sight, they hauled materials over hills to bring their dream to life, creating this testament to resilience and craftsmanship. This house holds a special place in our hearts and cherished memories, as it was where we spent our childhood days.

Fast forward to 2018, and we decided it was time to spruce up this gem. Despite its weathered appearance, our trusted carpenter assured us of the enduring quality of the wood, prompting us to embark on a meticulous restoration journey, preserving 90% of the original timber and breathing new life into every corner.

Now, our cottage seamlessly blends charm and comfort. Step inside, dear guest, and let’s weave some new stories in the enchanted eastern Cloudforest of Ecuador.

We open in 2020. As families sought to reconnect with nature, Posada Campo Libre became the perfect private escape just 2 hours from Quito. Within minutes of walking, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a beautiful lush forest, waterfalls, hummingbirds, orchids and pure air, inviting you to rediscover the beauty of simplicity.

Why this visit is so special

Your visit to La Escondida Waterfall is not only an exciting adventure, it is part of the important transition that this family and this community is promoting, shifting from cattle grazing to sustainable alternatives like ecotourism. Since the 1970s, this region has been highly deforested due to cattle grazing, resulting in the loss of thousands of hectares of native forest and seriously impacting habitats for species such as the Spectacled Bear, the Mountain Tapir, Andean Eagles, and many others.
For this family as for many others, the forest was considered “the useless” part of their farm, due to its unsuitability for cattle grazing. However, upon recognizing the potential within the forest and its biodiversity, the family shifted their mindset became advocates for conservation and took proactive steps by creating trails, inviting visitors. They went even further with Mily one of the daughters, becoming a licensed native guide. In 2020 the family welcomed the first visitors, proving possible this idea of transition and conservation. Today an important area of former cattle-grazing in the farm is dedicated to the reforestation projeect in which the family is actively engaged.

Your visit not only empower the Inchiglema-Quishpe family, also inspires the entire region to embrace this process of finding alternatives that are suitable to nature and the community wellbeing.

Why this visit is so special

By participating in a birdwatching trip in the Quijos Valley, you contribute to the preservation of wildlife and the long-term sustainability of our community. Here’s why:

Until 2021, the valley was entirely dedicated to cattle grazing, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of hectares of native forest, replaced by grass. In response to this situation, we established the Quijos Valley Birdwatchers team, a community-based organization that initiated environmental education efforts, promoting birdwatching as an alternative economic opportunity, and working on an intensive reforestation project. Eighteen families joined, and in partnership with local farmers, we have planted over 10,000 native trees.
As part of the reforestation projects, we established a tree nursery and a vermicomposting system to nourish the trees; every month, we plant trees in new farms that are allocating spaces for reforestation and conservation.

Our native garden at Posada Campo Libre is also part of these reforestation efforts. The first trees, now 4 meters tall, are a testament to the transition towards sustainability.

Monte Virgen Natural Reserve

Explore the pristine landscape of the eastern cloudforest, surrounded by waterfalls and untouched primary forest.

Virgin Forest Natural Reserve, Sumaco National Park

Experience hosted by farm owners / native guide
5 – 7 hours – hosted in Spanish and English
What you’ll do?

This hike requires a full day. We start by following the road along the Borja River, and then we enter the Virgin Forest trail through one of the less explored areas of the eastern cloud forest of South America. During this hike, we will have the wonders of the Sumaco National Park before our eyes. Clouds dancing with the mountains, an abundance of birds and orchids, and vibrant waterfalls are part of this paradise.

The Virgin Forest trail follows the footsteps of explorers who ventured into the jungle in the 1950s in search of treasures. After months of exploration and being lost in the jungle, they brought back a bell from the other side of the mountain where they found indigenous populations. Over time, a portion of the old track has been lost in the vegetation; however, the Virgin Forest trails will lead us up to 2500 meters above sea level, there the views are breath taking.

Once we arrive at the rest station, we will take a break for lunch. During the afternoon, we will have time to enjoy the healing power of the waterfalls and to explore the forest in search of the mountain toucan and other special creatures, then we return to the town.

Why this visit is so special

Vinicio and Anita, born and raised in Borja, were dedicated to cattle farming. Every weekend, they would visit the farm to ensure that everything was in order with their livestock. One day they arrived at the farm and found that the Andean bear had attacked the livestock. This difficult moment severely impacted their economy, but it also led them to reflect on the future and new alternatives for the family.

With a different mindset and understanding that what happened to them was not the fault of the bear, but rather due to the significant imbalance that humans have created in nature, in 2023 Vinicio and Anita joined the local team of conservation, Birdwatchers Valle del Quijos, for the preservation of wildlife and the long-term sustainability of our community.

They decided that not a single tree would be cut down on their farm anymore, and instead, they would reforest every space. They now dedicate their entire farm to conservation and biodiversity monitoring, thus Virgin Forest was born. In this transition, they have been pleasantly surprised by jungle gems such as the mountain toucan that lives near their rest station, woodpeckers nesting nearby, and even the Andean eagle that frequently flies over the surroundings.

At Posada Campo Libre, we are so proud to now establish this hiking experience on their farm, as we understand the importance of preserving the fragile area of the cloud forest where the Virgin Forest is located.

Tree Planting

Leave a legacy in the eastern cloudforest and be part of our reforestation initiative in the Quijos Valley. We started in 2021, be part of it.

Tree Planting, we invite you to leave a legacy

Experience hosted by the local conservancy team
1 – 2 Km – 3 hours – hosted in Spanish and English
What you’ll do

Join a fun tree planting tour in the Quijos Valley, a great opportunity to give back to the environment. By planting trees you help us to restore the habitat of native species such as the Andean Bear, the Andean Eagle, the Mountain Tapir, some of the endagered species that had lost their home due to cattle grazing.

You will meet up with the local conservation team in San Francisco de Borja, just 5 minutes away from our accomodation. We start by visiting the Tree Nursery, a space established in 2021 that acts as a temporary home for thousands of native trees. The tree nursery hosts over 40 species of trees native to the eastern cloud forest, all ready to be planted on local farms.

During our visit to the tree nursery, you’ll get a firsthand look at the seed collection process and the preparation of plants, including a stop at the vermicompost station.

After the tree nursery visit, we’ll head to one of our partner farms to begin planting. We believe that we can play a role in restoring our forest and be part of the response to the urgent needs of our planet, which is already facing the effects of accelerated climate change.
In the Quijos Valley, we’ve witnessed significant changes in weather patterns over the past few years. This has affected the availability of clean water, fresh air, and even our crops. We view tourism as an instrument to promote conservation in fragile ecosystems, which is why we offer tree planting experiences and encourage our visitors to join our efforts.

As each farm monitors the growth of the trees, you’ll have the opportunity to track the progress of your tree via GPS. This allows you to see exactly where and how your contribution is making a difference.

For each tour we will have 20 trees for planting. If you are interested in adding more trees for your tree planting session, please let us know and we will make that happen. Extra tree cost $2,50

Why this visit is so special

In the Quijos Valley, small-scale milk farmers receive a minimal compensation for their product. With high production costs and low prices in the market, it is difficult to thrive.

In response to this situation, Queseria Don Marcos opened in 2021 with the mission of being more than just a place of cheese production, but a catalyst for positive change in the community and a source of empowerment for local farmers. Currently, this dairy buys milk for a much better price than external companies and stands as a symbol of innovation. It proudly holds the distinction of being the first dairy in the Amazon of Ecuador to produce Gouda cheese. This remarkable achievement is made possible by the exceptional quality of milk sourced from the Quijos Valley.
Gender equality is also a pillar at this dairy, by welcoming individuals like Susana Diaz, who has mastered the art of cheese-making.

Your visit supports this dairy to continue its positive impact in the community.

Then, we delve into the post-harvesting stations to explore the detailed step-by-step process of producing specialty coffee with export-quality standards. From sorting and roasting to grinding and brewing, discover the secrets behind a perfect cup of coffee.

This is a great opportunity to treat your taste buds to a diverse collection of coffee blends, carefully selected to showcase the unique flavors of the cloud forest.

What you’ll do?

Even on a rainy day, we can still enjoy a fun activity in the Quijos Valley.
You can stay in our comfy accommodation, and we’ll bring this delicious treat to you. Since Ecuador produces some of the world’s best-quality cacao beans, this is a great opportunity to learn why Ecuadorian chocolate is so special.

At Posada Campo Libre, we have access to selected cocoa beans from the Cacao Producers Women’s Association of Napo Province. We reserve these beans for special occasions or days when the weather doesn’t allow outdoor activities, or when our guests simply want to relax.

We’ll guide you through the step-by-step process of transforming a cacao bean into a chocolate bar, following the traditional methods used in the Amazon of Ecuador. From roasting and grinding to tempering and molding, discover the secrets behind creating a delicious chocolate bar.

Of course, no chocolate-making experience would be complete without tasting some special combinations and ingredients that pair perfectly with chocolate. (Please notify us in advance of any food allergies)

What a magical place. Anyone looking for someplace truly off the beaten path should stay at Sandra’s place. Her sister Marcela was amazing. She’s studying to be a birding guide and is well on her way.
By the Grace of God, I’ll be fortunate enough to visit again.

Great place to stay while visiting the Quijos Valley. Spotlessly clean. Hosts can direct you to locations for birding. There are waterfalls to visit, and the towns of Baeza and El Chaco are interesting and very close.

A beautiful lodge. Big kitchen fully stocked , lovely wooden table, fireplace, lovely bedrooms each with a mezzanine bed a child would love, ideal for groups or a family, the bathroom is superb, super clean, warm, huge mirror, attention to detail, maps, books, and all topped off with a super friendly host Marcela, such a lovely woman, the place is next to the road but it isn’t busy or loud. Plants and flowers out the front attract birds, and we Saw a hummingbird right here whilst having breakfast outside. Close by there is a wonderful bird watching spot and the host kindly called the guy for us to make sure he knew we were coming! Local supermarket has everything you need for a lovely dinner and breakfast. Wish I could take the lodge with me always! Thanks!

Excelente lugar!!!

Sandra’s house is attractive and clean, with well-equipped kitchen, a pleasant balcony with a hammock, and a clay oven we cooked pizza in. Sandra and her sister Marcela were very friendly and cooked for us on the first night. Sandra was able to organise some fun activities with some friendly local people: easy horse-riding for our kids and a walk up to a very impressive waterfall. She also organised taxis for us when needed. The house’s location out of town by a main road probably makes it more suitable for people with their own transport.

We had the most incredible time staying here! The house itself is great, comfortable, and in a good location. But even more, hanging out with Sandra was so much fun. She showed us all around town, took us birdwatching, on a nice hike, and shared a ton of information about the Amazon. And her and her sister cooked amazing meals! I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Thanks so much Sandra!!
